Well apparently a dog is the only thing in this world that loves you more than itself - which is more than can be said for your bf.
I'd take the dog! If you get rid of the dog you may really grow to resent your bf, as you and the kids will pine for the dog and you'll be anxious about the dog's future.
As long as he has no repsonsibility for the dog I can't really see an issue for him. You never know he may grow to love it too.
