Unfortunately, the American Day Care System has very few teachers left who can actually teach, so it isn't at all surprising that the day care workers who masquerade as teachers would say something like that.
If you were educated before the 'new math' days then you know how math should be taught. If not, perhaps there is help on the internet.
I wish you good luck though, as I spent a number of years with college students who couldn't subtract 23 from 301 (for instance) in their heads when playing darts. It was so sad to see them having to pull out their phones to do simple math. College students who couldn't add or subtract simple numbers in their heads!
