I think the whole mystique with JtR is that he never was identified or caught. It makes an interesting story to speculate about who he was.
Genghis Khan and Atilla the Hun were larger than life historical figures that changed the world. By today's standards they may be thought of as murders or tyrants, but in their own time they were distinguished leaders and respected by many.
Yeah, Ghengis Khan created the largest empire on the planet. He was a hero to his people! I don't think he was "evil"... He just was ruthless compared to today's standards.
