There are several ways people deal with this. They either change their appearance (not always the best solution as you did mention the potential of an eating disorder).
Or they laugh at themselves and pre-empt jokes by getting in first (also not brilliant because it comes across as defensive and insecure if overplayed).
Or they develop a biting sense of humour so anyone making hurtful remarks gets something back (again not the best solution because you'll just end up fearing people into silence).
Or they do what I think most of us do; develop a thick skin. I'm sure I've been called dreadful things in my life but, to be honest, I'm struggling to think of any because I just let them slide off me.
The more you let things bother you, the worse the damage someone has done to you. I know it can be tough when people are mean but if you can ignore it, rise above it, don't hold a grudge, and don't torture yourself about it, you'll give yourself a happier life.
You can't change what people say, but you can change how you let it affect you.
Is it normal it bothers me so much?
