When you dress down, you seem approachable. When you dress up, you intimidate. I'm androgynous and The same thing happens to me. If I wear something casual or a tunic, people are more likely to approach me. If I'm wear one of my button down shirts, people seem to be less keen to talk with me. In general, people seem to shy away from having conversations with me which is great. I don't like being bothered.
