Perfectly normal. I am one of those who call a spade a spade - if I see someone I deem to be attractive, I will compliment them. Similarly, if I am talking to someone who I feel is particularly informed, clever, witty, has a great personality, etc - I will compliment them on that too.
Personally, I put the mind wayyy ahead of the body. Seriously, you should have seen my last wife - "Plain" is an understatement. Still doesn't mean I won't appreciate a beautiful woman for being a beautiful woman.
Now, someone with a cool personality, who is down to earth, funny, goofy, weird, etc AND is pretty... I think you'd make me feel inadequate and unworthy! ;)
