I feel that way about my boyfriend occasionally. We've been together since 2004, but I never really thought about it until we moved in together. I know exactly what you mean about fear of investment. I think that's just what it is. It's hard to put so much trust into someone that you're with because you both choose to be there, unlike parents and siblings who are more predictable to you. When two people love each other, I think they love each other in different ways, which is also difficult for each to accept. I think sometimes people confuse their partner loving them 'differently' with 'not loving'.
Basically, this is usually just a phase and you pass through it you get to the next level.
