Interesting question. Id say maybe because America had a pretty good go around with slavery, so perhaps when that ended rather than have a term that seems so separable such as are neighbors are "blacks", people wanted to use something that was more inclusive that rang as reminder that they are americans too such as " Are neighbors are african americans" they arnt just colored folk anymore but americans who originated from Africa . You know what i mean? since colored/blacks was used to separate people, once people decided slavery was unethical, and wanted to give africans the freedom to be an american with all the rights of any other immigrant american , they decided to keep it right in the name with "african american" perhaps because they received a fair bit of hatred for some time, so to call them true americans was a big deal at the time, such a big deal that they kept it right in the name as a reminder that they are americans. Man gives me goose bumps just thinking about how great our homeland is, despite all its chaos and fuckery, despite it being cultural melting possibly causes more problems/ difficulties, its pretty amazing that we are nation of the world in a way, built on the foundation of the american dream, where people from all around the world have fled to the usa since the very beginning and they've been able to become apart of it. despite its messiness, it makes me proud to be an american
IIN I wonder why black people in the US are called African-Americans?
