Is it normal i want to live in the uk?

I don't know what so great about living in the USA, life's way to complicated and I hate being an American! I honestly don't know why, I just want to live in a tiny market city in England or anywhere in the UK basically. Their music is better, their air is cleaner, there aren't so many fat people and black and whites get along for the most part... Is this normal?

    Hey there!

When Austinsmith47 pointed out that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, I was struck by how true that is.

As an English girl who emigrated, I can tell you that the UK definitely isn't as great as it's cracked up to be.
Racial diversity is accepted, sure - with some people. It's sad how racist this whole world is...everywhere you go, whoever you meet: some people are good, others bad.

I hated growing up as a kid in England, I thought it was 'The Land of Grey and Boring' and needed to be spiced up.
The drug abuse, street crime and alcoholism is extensive, and some of the countryside has been messed up by drunken revellers throwing bottles in the grass, illegal party raves crushing wildlife over nature reserves.
I hate partying anyway, I don't drink or do drugs, and in England that's almost a crime!

I grew up having never travelled, imagining that every other place MUST be better than this; that if only I could emigrate, things would be okay.

But at age 17, I moved in with my Irish husband to Dublin - and to be honest, it's not much different.
The people in England are more superficial, more fake than the Irish, but the drink still gets glugged, the discos still go on.

I know I'd never move back to England - but to tell the honest truth, I think most places have their downsides.
    However awesome they are!

I hope this was useful, a bit of insight from a girl from Old Blighty!

Feel free to ask any questions!

    xx

It is a great place to be. I love my country and would never leave but it's not as great as you think it is. The air isn't that clean (unless you live out in the country) and there is a lot of racism! We have chavs. Gun and knife culture. A lot of rough people basically.
But if you are rich enough to live in the nicest of places, then you'll be fine. Sadly, not all of us have money and have to put up with bad people.

I would love to be able to travel the world for a few years before I picked a place to finally settle in. How awesome would that be?!

I struggle to understand why so many people want to live in the UK. Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of things going for us (especially in a historical sense), but I feel as if it's a bit overrated.
Although perhaps my view is clouded by the fact that I live here and therefore it is bound to seem a little boring.

  • I have lived in many areas here, so I don't recomend any cities.

It's an astonishingly beautiful country. The Cotswolds are the inspiration for the Shire in Lord of the Rings and we've got things like Bodiam castle (which perhaps should only exist in fairy tales) and Skara Brae. My American friends very much enjoy living here, probably more than British people enjoy living here.

I guess when you're somewhere other than the place you see day in, day out, you appreciate it more. For my part, I'd quite like to live in America for a while, so maybe Britain isn't as great as it seems. It's home, though.

P.S. If you really did want to move and needed advice or help about anything, just ask.

I'm always looking for new places to visit and didn't know about Bodiam castle. It looks great and definitely goes on the list.

I first saw it on a morning with low-lying mist all around it. I don't usually feel much nationalistic fervour but when I saw it, I did think: "Oh my! This is part of my country. This is me. This beautiful, beautiful thing is England".

And then I thought about starting a war with the French. :P

Depends where you move. As nice as England is, you make it sound better than it really is.

I think it's normal to want to move. But you have to remember that you've never been to the UK, life there might not be as great as you think. But, I've never lived in the UK either. It's the whole moving to another country thing in general.

Um, you MAY want to rethink that plan...

The entire EU is collapsing. You know, that thing with Greece and all... And Spain asking for a bailout... and Italy is just as bad, and so on, and so forth...

America is collapsing, too. You just have a teeny weeny bit more time here. Stock up on provisions, protection, and things like that. You know, like camping. Only you may have to shoot someone to protect your 'fort'.

    Just saying.

But seriously, you're doin' it wrong.

It's: FUCK THE CORPORATE ENTITY CALLED THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT IS ACTUALLY JUST THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SWELLED INTO THE SHAPE OF THE STATES BECAUSE THE STATES DON'T MEAN SHIT ANYMORE AND WE'RE ALL LITTLE WALKING CORPORATION-SLAVES TO THE BIG BANKERS WHO ARE RUNNING US INTO THE GROUND FOR THE PURE PLEASURE OF IT.

England is a shit country full of unfriendly rude people. The Conservative government runs it to suit their rich pals. There are too many immigrants, the whole of the South East is full of housing developments and roads jammed with cars. The streets are filthy, litter everywhere, councils have no money so they can't clean, nor can they provide social care for the elderly because the government cuts their funding year after year. The government withdraws funding from any alternative energy projects and simultaneously wriggles out of EU laws about air pollution which is way too high. The government is also destroying the NHS, depriving as many people of benefits as possible, we have a bedroom tax so that if you're poor you're chucked out of your house if you have a bedroom spare, pension ages are escalating, students pay huge amounts for shit degrees from badly funded universities, the education system is a check box, low level process struggling to find teachers because they all get stressed out and leave in droves, the food is shit and monopolised by the supermarkets, property prices are astronomical and while some benefit hugely by being lucky enough to have bought in the long ago past, the young are deprived of being able to buy a cardboard walled hovel on a new estate because an average worker simply can't afford to buy especially in the South East. Sheesh, how can anyone defend this place, I hate it, wish I'd left years ago.

England is brilliant. No racism in comparison to America, yes there will always be some in any country. We don't openly have these stupid homophobic hate unlike in many countries, people are lovely and very welcoming. Obviously America is nice too- but why don't you see what englands like for a bit?

  • I also wanted to move to the US When I was younger now I don't think of moving their anymore and don't wish to.
your country is always going to be Boring because you live their and know the place, I have learned to love my country even though I hate something's about it.

but try traveling to the UK maybe holidaying for a few weeks and then GO back Home and decide if you still want to move to the UK Because when you go to another country you will start to miss something about home.

I bet the only reason you say you hate the USA is because you have been "brainwashed", in a sense. It's cool to hate the USA these days. Don't move to another country simply because you have been told to hate your country. That would make you a douchebag.

You should do a temporary life swap with someone in the UK. They live in your house and you live in their house then you can see if you really like it.
