Yes, I want to go to work, to the bank, supermarket, doctors', classes, yoga, well... everything, by horse. I'd sell the car, buy a couple of horses and invest whatever is left. I would be exercising, saving money on gas and it would be environmentally friendly. I just can't figure out how to park yet. IIN?
I wish it could work, the main problem is that there's nowhere to comfortably and safely 'park' your horse in town anymore. No more hitching posts with troughs these days!! There also used to be liveries everywhere for this very reason, they'd keep your horse and feed and water it while you did whatever you had to do. I guess if enough people got together it could be feasible to open liveries or hitching posts in some places again.
For it to be practical I'd think you'd really have to start a movement. That would also ease the work and expense involved if you could get a group together to work cooperatively.
A horse is probably more expensive and more work to keep for many people (unless you already have a farm) vs your average car when you figure in car payments and insurance and the other incidentals.
Horses smell very bad and I doubt that you would want to clean up their dung. They can also flip you and cause you serious injury. How would you be able to make sure it stays after you leave it? How would you be able to store your groceries and still ride the horse at the same time? It's normal to want a horse. Sometimes, I wish I had a dragon or a flying unicorn, but alas I can't. Why don't you get a bicycle or a moped? Those are better than a car and much quieter than a motorcycle.
Horses require grazing (fencing), feed, a stable, veterinary care, grooming and shoeing. By the time that you add up these costs, plus the cost of the carriage, I don't think you will be saving anything. Plus, if millions of people went back to using horses for transport in urban areas, this would lead to a whole new set of problems.
Would it not make more sense to live in a place where you could go to work, to the bank, supermarket, doctors', classes, yoga, well most everything by walking a short distance or taking an efficient electric transport?
It would save gasoline, but how would the horse know where to go? Not to mention you'd have to clean up after it.

I thought this before to! Despite the smelliness, I definately agree. There probably wouldn't be any horse crashes either :P
Man, that would be so nice. I've already got a horse, but it would make travel a lot longer...
Someone tried this in a busy town not far from where I live, the heat they got from the public and from local businesses was unbelievable. The horse was not causing anyone harm or grief but it was too different I guess. The person had a proper barn and paddock for the animal and it was treated like a king but it just didn`t matter, people wanted it gone. The municipality couldn`t do anything to support the public's wishes because it was in the bylaws from years ago that anyone living in the town was within their rights to own a horse.
The guy eventually gave in to the public because he was being isolated by the community as a troublemaker.
Environmently friendly? What about the road apples that they leave behind, in my opinion that is just as bad as littering. Maybe you should consider investing in a new horseback riding hobby, but certainly consider all the time and effort that would be put into it if you actually got a real horse. (By the way I want to exchange my car for a ufo spaceship I could drive to school, so its still okay to have fantasies).
