Ultimately it's your choice but it's not without concequence.
I'm not sure what, "exploration" you're talking about, it's not "exploration" as much as it's that you just want to sleep around, which hey is your choice but could backfire later on in life as people will see you as untrustworthy, someone they can't depend on.
I'd say to split with your partner regardless even if you don't go through with it, I don't think he deserves to be with someone who would even consider this.
I knew/know a girl who done exactly this. Lets just say she lost in the end, her entire reputation went down the toilet as someone you could have a healthy relationship with and now she's searching for a boyfriend and all she's getting are guys who will be fuck buddies until they find a girl to settle down with, which has now happened four times with her.
So, nothing wrong with sleeping around, your body and what not. Dumping your boyfriend for it, meh, questionable but if you don't love him enough to stay then I don't see a problem, but just be wary of the possible concequences.
