Lots of progress is being made on hybrid cars. Substantial R&D efforts by the likes of Toyota and others are going towards getting hydrogen engine technology off the ground.
Where I live, there are bus networks being put in place with their own lanes and at a low price. They connect all major towns and cities, kinda like trains. Since they're separate from other traffic and have their own separate traffic lights as well, I'd say they're pretty safe. Also I'm sure you've heard of Tesla's Hyperloop and Uber, Google, et al's ongoing development of self-driving cars.
So there ya go, all your concerns are being addressed.
