When somebody is that desperate they often don't stop to think about anything else.
This could have been a split second impulse rather than a thought out plan. We'll never know what went through his head but he obviously saw no other way out. That doesn't make it okay, it may be selfish but when you're in that frame of mind you don't stop to think, or you're trying to stop the thinking.
