Is it normal I think prison sentences should be indefinite?

OP is probably one of those people who thinks anyone who had grades over B in school and went to college can do nothing wrong. Because rote memorization makes you a good person.

Of course not, but MOST people who are incarcerated aren't especially "evil". For most of them, it's accurate to say that they'd probably not be doing criminal activities if they had an education, a job, help with a drug problem, mental health services, etc. These are the people I'm most concerned about. What we're doing now isn't working, they are let out with virtually no hope of obtaining employment, no skills and a parole officer breathing down their necks and they end up right back in prison.

I'm not saying to let EVERYONE back out either, clearly a serial killer, mass shooter, bomber, or repeat rapist shouldn't be let back out but virtually everyone else should be at least considered for release if progress in rehabilitation/education/etc is satisfactory.
