It is not normal to feel happy and sad at the same time.
Happy and sad are polar opposites, 'implying a negative correlation between the experience of the two emotions'.
Meaning they cannot be felt together at the same time.
There is only one way in which they could, and that would be from a person suffering from bipolar disorder.
You can read more about the psychology and analysis of happy and sad at the same time here http://psychology.uchicago.edu/people/faculty/cacioppo/jtcreprints/lmc01.pdf
Further: Sometimes people may say they are having a 'bittersweet' moment. Where they feel pleasure and pain at the same time. Since the overall feeling would be pleasure this could mean they are feeling happy and not sad. Again not at the same time.
When I was younger I had a gf who would cry (seemingly sadly) if she laughed too much.
I explained to her (and this is going on 25years ago now) That she must be relating the 'tears' of joy to 'thinking' that she was upset. Instantly feeling the tears on her face made her upset. Thus she went from happy to sad. She was never happy and sad at the same time. Since this is not natural.
I notice that 'JustShoveIt' member above has been rewarded a couple of thumbs up referring to my intelligence. I then decided to disregard helping him in this.
But you 'lockets' I wanted to inform the truth.
It is impossible to feel happy and sad at the same time, unless you have a mental issue like bipolar disorder.
Is it normal I tend to smile and laugh the most when I'm extremly sad?
