Is it normal i pretend fictional characters are real?

I am 21 years, a girl. I often deal with obsessions over fictional characters by pretending they exist. For instance, when I go to the mall I may pretend I am actually there not to shop but together with the character on a mission. (though not so anyone can tell of course)

When I am alone I may act it out and have a "conversation" with the character (sometimes pretending I am an OC). I would say I am kind of making my life into a fanfiction. I have done this since as long as I can remember, but I actually never thought I'd continue after childhood.

Is this normal/common?

  • I have no idea whether this is normal or not... but its not really hurting anyone. You sound kind of lonely though (please don't take that as an insult). I get the allure to fictional characters so I could totally see why you do this. If anything, all I can say is just don't lose touch with reality, real life people can be really awesome sometimes.

  • Its pretty much common . Me , for instance was reading a crime novel on my iphone and when i found out about who the killer may be i fantasized about being his lover and telling him stuff like "im not afraid of you" it was geeky but i liked it X_X

  • Normal, somewhat. I do that to an extent, too.

  • I've done that all my life. It's even hard to stop sometimes..

  • I'd say it's not normal.

By that I mean not usual, common, typical. By that I don't mean it's a bad thing. Most people don't do it.

  • I'm pretty much the same but I only imagine everything in my head. I never had "conversation" with fictional character.
