IIN I occasionally cringe remembering my past days on Instagram?

  • Everyone tries out stuff and then thinks, "Why the fuck did I do that, when I knew it was stupid from the start?"

Don't beat yourself up over this. At one particular point in your life, your desire to conform to the norms of your group overwhelmed the rational part of you. That's a very normal thing to do, and there are far, far worse ways in which you could have done it. Rather than being annoyed at yourself, be proud that you have the strength to go your own way rather than charging aimlessly around and bleating your head off with all the social media sheep.

You're right: nobody apart from your close real-life friends cares what you post. Even they probably don't pay a lot of attention to what you put up because most of their energy is spent curating their own phoney image and whoring for the likes.

It's really pretty damn pathetic, but social media hit on a very effective way to keep us coming back when they invented the "Like" button. We all get a little dopamine hit when we see that someone has expressed approval of something we've posted, and it can be a form of addiction.

    • Thanks for the advice! It's really nice to look at a positive perspective after feeling really shitty for being an oblivious narcissist back then, haha.

It's hard to tolerate those tons of pointless selfies and boring daily life stuff they kept shoving on my face.

I am sick of making myself feel like a fake for pretending that I care about their lives. I am sure most of them don't even care about mine neither. I really have to agree with you on the social media 'likes'. Most people care about those meaningless 'likes' that won't do shit to save them when they're in troubles. I've known my colleagues who got competitive for likes instead of actually just connecting with each other.

I feel like social medias are filled with lots of fake people showing their fake happiness in the pictures and status updates. I got into this conclusion because it turns me into one too back then. *Shudder*
