I know this is going to unleash a series of insulting posts, but how does someone actually get banned? Is it an automatic thing when they've been reported a certain number of times, without the mods checking if the reports are justified?

Yeah well, you are one of a very small minority that feels this way. Had nothing to do with his account being disabled, but REALLY don't care as he was quite universely disliked with his rants and raves at ANYONE who disagreed with him. I won't miss him at all, though despite his promise as vernonb said about never coming back as it's for losers (can't believe how you missed that seeing, the amount of time you are on here), he WILL come back eventually only because he likes the sound of his own voice and venting his opinions on everyone (with extreme prejudice)too much, to stay away where he is obviously not wanted.
How would he make it obvious though? There have been so many troll accounts related to his username that it would be downright impossible to be taken seriously if he wanted to be known as a "sailor" again. Most likely, if he leaves, he'll be gone.
I hope not, though. I have a lot of fun destroying him in arguments and I really do enjoy our brutal, banterous exchanges.

All I DO know is, once his self confidence in himself is back (which he has an over abundance of) he will very likely come back, so that he can once again enter into fights with everyone on this site. He might even think up a new user name and also a new background story, who knows? :P

I copped a few "rants & raves" when I disagreed with him but gave the same back.
Ellena, I am much of the same age as you and him (just turned 60) but I never preached about the wisdom of my years (fuck I'm still learning at my age)and then chucking a temper tantrum that my 6 year old niece would be proud of. Also he was NOT unpopular with just some people, most people here hated his guts for the disgusting things he said like Plebolio below pointed out to you, his stance on drugging and forcing abortions on a young girl! AND he was a liar as well, every time he was called out on something he would deny it vehemently despite people copying and pasting the text on which he said his revolting statements.

I argued strongly with him about that, quite a few posts went back and forth and eventually he stopped answering me about it. And yeah, there were other occasions when he would reply harshly and dismissively to people in trouble and I'd confront him on it.
Still, he never advocated rape of women and children and other disgusting acts which other people are STILL getting away with.
I suspect his karma (which was probably considerably high after being built up over years) was recently whittled down to near zero over recent months. Then eventually he just got taken out like the troll he really was when his karma went decidedly negative. Just my speculation
