It's not as bad as it used to be because there are non-invasive ways of breaking them up but it's still apparently pretty unpleasant.
Avoiding them is roughly the same as avoiding gout. There are many types of kidney stone but general advice would be: don't drink alcohol, avoid red meat, crustaceans, cola, grapefruit juice, drink lots of water, and cut down on your salt.
I'm an occasional gout sufferer and it is definitely diet related with me. Being a vegetarian (who loves water and can't take caffeine) helps, but I do like grapefruit juice very much and I'm never going to cut out alcohol and prawns from my life.
Is it normal I'm terrified of getting a kidney stone?
