Is it normal I'm easily annoyed?

  • The phrase "People these days" implies that you haven't always been this irritable, correct?

Sudden (or even gradual) changes in irritability can be caused by insomnia and other sleep problems, continuous exposure to physical or emotional pain (think of how irritable hungover people generally are), hunger and/or excessive dieting, normal fluctuation of hormones (this applies to both men and women), or stress.

If you have been dealing with periods of irritability on-and-off for a long time, it could be a symptom of depression (particularly in teenagers and young adults), Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, a personality disorder or other mood disorder, or an anxiety disorder. It could also be related to a thyroid problem or other health issue.

If I had to guess, it's probably just stress and possibly one or two of the other issues in the first list (like natural hormonal changes or sleep deprivation).... Irritability is oftentimes a symptom of depression that is overlooked (most people associate depression with sadness, not anxiety or irritability) and presents itself most often in teens and young adults, so that could also be possible, especially if you have other symptoms of depression or low serotonin.
If these feelings continue for more than a couple weeks or become so intense that you have trouble coping with them or respond in a violent fashion, I'd get checked out by a doctor to make sure it's not a symptom of something more serious.

Sometimes people are just annoying though.
