You can love someone without depending on him. I'd even argue that being self-reliant and loving someone is far better than being needy and loving someone.
I know what it's like to suffer loss and become cautious about getting close to others, but good people are worth that risk. Just because you welcome someone into your heart doesn't mean you become dependent.
