If you want to be virtuoso shredder, then scales and exercises are important.
But if you just want to be a good rock guitarist, then you can learn a lot just by learning and playing the songs and music that you like.
Learning scales is still good for improvisation, but running up and down them is kinda pointless (unless you're working on speed).
