It's never a good idea to buy used clothes. The previous owner's skin particles, sweat, blood, urine and possibly fecal (I know it's spelled wrong) matter or some other substance can still be ingrained into the fibres of the cloth. It's like buying a house from someone that has a carpet. You never really know what's been done on/to it. You'd be better off buying new clothes or making them yourself.
When I was a kid, my mum couldn't afford to get me new clothes that often, so we got 2nd hand ones from other family members or from charity shops for cheap. In fact, many charity shops rely on donations of clothes for revenue! Also, many clothes are sent overseas to poverty-stricken countries where clean and whole items of clothing are a luxury.
Frankly, if it's clean, looks alright and is intact, it's fit for wear. Suggesting to others that it is "never a good idea" is ridiculous! You might have your high standards, but not everybody cares or can afford to care. I'd rather people exchange old clothes than fill up landfill sites with perfectly serviceable garments.
God dammit! I wasn't trying to be snobby! I am not a snob. I was merely stating what I was taught as a child. Something that I thought had truth to it until reading Disthing's comments.
I don't even know why I bother sometimes! What is the fucking point for anything if you have to be so fucking careful for fear that someone is going criticize you or bite your fucking head off ?!
I'm not trying to criticize you..but that's an extremely snobby thing to say. Where I'm from (Dallas) even wealthy people shop at thrift stores because of the wide and unique selections. I am by no means poor; but most of my cutest outfits come from thrift shops.
Unless you're extremely OCD or otherwise afraid of germs, as long as you wash the clothes (although the stores do this themselves) there should be nothing to worry about.
Honestly, you should check out a thrift shop, salvation army, or good will. You might be surprised at some of the cool and unique things you find. With a username like avante-garde, you should be impressed. ;)
