There are special additives you can buy at most major outdoor outfitter supply stores that you can add to your fire to make the flames have pretty colors. And they don't even stink. Most of these additive packages are called "campfire rocks". They last a couple of hours in a fire and it's mesmerizing to watch.
I'm not saying I particularly identify with the OP, because it is rather strange in my opinion. But I do love chemistry, and there is something satistfying about watching something like that knowing it wasn't artificially engineered by humans.
