Every time I go on I have loads of notifications and messages, but I still hate it and think it's literally useless.. other than for easy contact, which is why I keep it up.
I used to be obsessed with it in high school, though. I think it's just losing its appeal over time due to how much irrelevant stuff pops up on newsfeeds and the overall drama it causes.

it tends to be a bit better as you and your friends grow up and mellow out. and you delete all the crazy (over-dramatic) friends off your list
