Is it normal i have a love of germany?

Hi people! I was wondering is it normal to have such an admiration and love for a land you've never seen? I'll start from when I was 13, I used to March the school yard like a German solider with my friends, I've always been fond of Germany and German culture for some reason. I like to think of myself as a iconic German, tall and muscular with blonde hair and blue eyes. As I've got older my love has grown stronger I feel like I'm a German born abroad! I want to move to Germany and have a German family, Bavaria, Munich, in particular. I'm learning German and want to be a part of the nation. The only thing is I'm an Englishman and I'm extremely patriotic...Does this make me a traitor and dishonourable to my nation? I'd like to have a tattoo of Germany and England as I class these as my nationalities. Is this normal!?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • There is nothing wrong wanting to be German :)

There is a saying in German "Du siehst den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht" translated "You fail to see the forest because of the trees". The saying basically means there is more to what you hear or see about a place/thing. Germany is not some Utopia so don't expect everything to be perfect.

About the "German marching or Stechschritt" I'm assuming you are referring to the "Goose stepping" that is no longer used by the Bundeswehr. The last time Goose stepping was part of the military was by the Nationale Volksarmee (East Germany). People assume this is "German" but this is actually Prussian.

Being blond and blue eyed.. well you're going to have a difficult time trying to blend in especially in München since the locals are normally shorter and have darker hair colours in comparison to the Northern Germans. Actually I read up that Scandinavia, the Netherlands and England has higher blond rates in comparison to Germany as a whole.

Oh and remember "Don't mention the war" being an "Engländer" Germans are fully aware of the war and most if not all are thankful the allies won against Hitler.

  • Heh, I'm doing my degree in German, so I also share a love for the place. Although I can't really relate to your post much. I thought it sounded a bit Nazi lover-ish.:S

Gorgeous place. Definitely give it a visit.:)

  • My first thought of someone tall, blond, and blue-eyed is a Scandinavian. Hitler tried to convince Germany that these were perfect, "Aryan" traits, becoming of a "master race" belonging to Germany. I think that might be why a lot of responses assume that you're referring to Nazi Germany.

Nothing else in your text alluded to Nazis.

I think what you're feeling is normal. I often get nostalgic when I think of ancient Greece...but I'm far from Greek haha.

      • Four actually.

I used this definition in the context of the thread. Why do you ask?

        • Oh, no, I was just asking to see. :)

          Wait, four?
I had always thought it was two.

    • Yeah ''Nordic superior race'' or ''Supreme Aryan'' was his ideology. Baltic kind of people, northern Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland...And ancient greeks were genius...Do you believe in the greek gods?

  • One of the "master race" are you?
But who were the Anglo Saxons again? When did they get to England? Any more questions?

      • No hate; read a bit. England was invaded by the Anglo Saxons a few years back, also called the Germanic hoards, so it's quite likely that he has some German blood, long, long before the Nazis.

        • I probably do have German ancestors, it's common to. Perhaps I do and this is where the love of the fatherland comes from?
