Do you have any proof that this was purposeful and deliberate? Many words naturally change over time, or fall out of favor. And I am aware of the whole "You're secretly gay and that's why you act like you dislike gays" theory. If you don't think homophobia does mean or can mean "hatred of gays," is there another way you would phrase it? There are many people who truly do hate gays, but few who "fear" them, I would think.
Well this was kind of already explained in my original post but this isn't exactly a term that has been around for a couple hundred years to evolve. It is a very new term, and as I explained when it started to be used, the rational given for its use was that hate is the result of a fear of what you do not understand. So if you hate gays, you must fear them because you don't understand them, so you are homophobic. But as you agreed in your last sentence, that is nonsense. There are many people who hate gays but don't fear them.
Now if you feel there is nothing wrong with the term as is, that is your opinion, you are entitled to it, and I respect it. But you clearly have no knowledge as to the origin of the word itself and are not claiming to. That being the case, I have no idea why you would argue the point of how it came to be without at least researching the topic to educate yourself on it before hand. Because the origin of the word is not a matter of opinion, it actually had to come from somewhere. Unlike you, I am aware of that origin because I was around when it was developed.
It was created by a psychologist in the 1960's but didn't really start getting used by the general public until the 80's and it is a fear of homosexuals or of being homosexual yourself. It is used to describe people who hate gays for the reasons I already explained.
No I didn't claim to know the origin. I just was saying that today, MANY people think it means "hate." It's a common use nowadays. I'm not disagreeing with you.
I know many people today think that, and they think it without ever wondering why. I said all that in my original post. And it does mean a person who hates gays, but it is a fear based hate, which I think most people such as yourself are unaware of. It is that fear part that I disagree with.
Is it normal I hate the term homophobia?
