I agree with you 100%. I get asked to help a lot because I'm a bit of a workhorse. Just because I'm strong, though, doesn't mean I want to spend every day off carrying people's accumulated crap.
I can't remember how it started but my friends and I gradually came up with a better way of doing it. The people moving ask about 15-20 people to help. It cuts down the work massively and you get to meet some new people. Then, at the end of it, the movers order about ten pizzas, and the first crate of beer is cracked open. The whole thing is like a party which just begins with a bit of physical labour. We almost look forward to it.
