I suppose it's normal if they are part of some group you belong to. Like your family, ethnicity or age group. So you assume others will think you are like them.
It's like if there's an argument between two groups and suddenly one from your side says something outrageous fully confident that the group is backing him. (As often seen and experienced on the internet)
