Is it normal, i don't want to vote for a president this year, 2012?

Well, I'm female, just turned 18 and this will be my first time as a voter, but I'm not sure i want to vote this year. I'm not a big Obama fan. I'm also not a big Santorum fan either. Come to think of it, neither any of the candidates this year, i really like. They're just way too controlling and i just don't like it. Especially Santorum, irritates me to death.
I'm neither a Republican or a Democrat. I'm an independent.
But yeah, i tell my mom that i don't really want to vote this year for a president. She tells me I'm a wicked person.
She says it's my duty as an American to vote. But i don't really feel i have to if i don't want to. She makes me feel bad that i don't want to. But i don't want to be forced to vote for someone if i don't like them.
Is it really that big of a deal that i don't want to vote this year? I mean I'm not itching to get my bum in the voting room.. i just don't see it as a big deal if i don't feel like voting this year. Maybe when there's actually a decent runner, in my opinion. So yeah, question again is, am i wrong because i don't want to vote..?

Vote. Vote for the candidate you find the least objectionable. What if a retard like Santorum wins by one vote, and you could have stopped him?

I thought it was God who put him in the damn race to begin with! First he's responsible for him running, now we have to thank him for leaving. This God guy has almost as many positions as Mitt Romney.

  • There are more than two candidates running, and you can always write in a vote. I've voted third party several times. That, by itself, makes a valid statement and gives you a voice.
    Yes...you need to vote.

      This.
Many people don't realize how much influence they have when they vote third party. It sends a message and the message is that there are many American people that are unsatisfied with the current popular policies.

Wouldnt it be great if nobody voted? Might show the people in power that we dont want to play their silly games anymore.

It doesnt matter who you vote for, the president is just a puppet anyway.

Look how many lies and fake promises obama made to get in house....

I barely know anything about current American politics, or even what the candidates even stand for- I don't feel like I should vote since I don't know a lot of stuff about what's going on in the world right now.

If you don't want to vote, then don't vote. It's your choice.

Not voting doesn't make you a bad person. If you don't see someone fit to be president, don't vote. Also, DON'T vote for 'the better guy who's got a chance'. The only person you should vote for is 'the good guy'.
Would you date someone just because they're 'better than your last' or would wait until you find someone who's worth it?
If you don't like them, don't vote them.

Indeed, there are many people who feel the way you do. The current electoral system in the United States has become systematized and biased in favor of the established power brokers. The Electoral College is in fact what has been called an 'indirect democracy'. By definition, this is not a democracy at all, since a 'democracy' is a goverment by the people.
What I feel is needed, is a reorganization of the political landscape, to a system that is more fair and thus more representative.
How can this be accomplished where the current electoral system and mainstream media is heavily weighted in favor of these two political parties?
    1) Revolution. (I do not feel this is a viable option because it would cause economic and social upheaval).
    2) Elect a strong Independent Candidate. The problem with this, is that even if a candidate were elected, the system would consume them, corrupt them and very little would be done to achieve reform of the system.
    3) Organize. I feel this is the best option. Work within the current system. Have a mindset for a gradual transformation to a truly representative democratic system. Co-operate with established third parties such as the Libertarian Party, Green Party, etc. as well as any neutral Independent candidates. Avoid radical or extremist political or religious-based candidates, but try to convince them to drop these ideologies. Co-operate with the Occupy movement.
What is needed is an internet-based system to organize your concerns for political and social inequality and injustice. You would keep track of how many (popular) votes would go to these 'other' candidates.
Make a legally binding agreement with both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney that they will work in co-operation with our spokesperson, should they accept. We would then advise our people to vote for who we feel is the better candidate, rather than the 'other' candidates.
Our spokesperson will have an office inside the White House. They would be subject to re-call and replacement should they be negligent in their duties. Their salary will be capped to the median income in the jurisdiction where they live.

    • I would agree with a good portion of your post, but you lost me with aligning with the occupy movement. In no way can I relate to a group of spoiled children who believe that they are automatically entitled to six-figure salaries simply because they participated in the educational process. The movement was created by a generation raised with "participation trophies," it's riddled with criminal elements, and supported by weathy tycoons like Soros and Buffet...the irony would be funny if it weren't so destructive.
I do often find your posts intriguing and insightful, but I must respectfully, though vehemently disagree with that.

I agree with you about the Occupy movement.

I've seen a lot of interviews with protesters and most have literally no idea what they want, or really what they're protesting against. They just paint generic slogans on banners and parade about. It might have sincerity at its heart, but it's so swamped in ignorance and indecisiveness it renders the whole thing redundant.

I agree that many people in the Occupy movement are disillusioned and lack a solid platform on what they stand for. The danger is, that many in this protest movement are now leaning towards socialism or communism, which is unacceptable. We must keep a Capatilist system for the time being, but correct the worst inequities in it. We should try to bring them back to a better viewpoint. Please watch this:

  • So everybody knows, if Obama did not get elected we wouldn't be posting here on IIN because McCain would have completely taken the country into ruin. Every citizen would be living like a Plantation Slave in the 1800s South, kept in conditions like India's slums, with RFID chips in our hands doing the menial labor that is now done by people in China. This may not have happened right away but somehow this scenario would likely have evolved at some point. Maybe it wouldn't already be that way, but going in that direction. Oh and one last thing, DO NOT get the RFID chip. They may have good intentions with them now to help find missing kids, track criminals, etc. but when corporations like Monsanto get ahold of this technology it will be used for the enslavement of all citizens if we let it

Yeah, it's normal. I am voting for Ron Paul in the primary, but since it's pretty obvious he's not going to win that, I have no idea who I've vote for in the main election.

    Two other points:

Even if you can't get behind any presidential candidate, don't forget there will be other things to vote for. Perhaps there will be a state or local initiative that interests you.

It's a secret ballet, right? Your mother doesn't need to know how (or if) you vote.

Always vote for the lesser of two evils. Just because neither is your ideal winner, that isn't really a good reason not to vote at all.

A lot of people seem to think that staying at home in protest will somehow make the situation any better. That isn't how the system works; in fact, it'll be worse because the parties don't try and win the votes of people who didn't vote, so they'll just move even further away from what you want. Vote for a third party, that is more of a protest than not voting at all.

By voting for a third party you show the big two parties where you want them to be. Republicans and Democrats care about appealing to the third party vote because it can mean the difference between winning and losing an election. By voting for a third party you are telling the major parties what you want them to be like next time.

Voting for the lesser of two evils is the greater evil. It's a key piece of our totally broken system. As long as politicians can count on a vote for just being less objectionable, they will never try for anything better than that. If people had the guts to vote only for actually GOOD candidates, that would change everything.

I always find debates odd. As if republicans might decide to vote democrat or vice versa, really its only new voters debates might sway, so exercise real power and don't choose a box to put yourself in, unless you fo want yo vote third party/independant, or. NOT AT ALL. I do feel u should use your voice, get your thoughts heard, but if you don't want either candidate voting doesn't accomplish that
