Is it normal i don't see a point in the marathon for sickness?

Alright this is not saying I hate them or that its a bad idea. My confusion is this. Somehow us running around for a few streets somehow is going to cure cancer, aids, leukemia so on. How? Please explain to me how? I really do not see the correlation between running and curing a desiese?

I mean yeah it might make the runners healthy but how are we helping the ill. So one day this was explained to me. Apparently a bunch of rich guys say "If so many people run I will make a donation to the organization that helps cure these people".

Alright here is were it gets even more pointless. First off why is this random rich guy paying for this? Also what satisfaction or benefit does he get from us running around all day.

I mean they could have simply given the organization the money without making us run around like a bunch of brainless monkeys right? So why are they making us run? So they could laugh at us "Look how rich I am I could make all these people run around for me". WHY? WHY? None of these seems to make sense. What is the rich guy getting?

The sponsors do it to make money, the runners do it to feel better about themselves by pretending to help a good cause. Pointless greed and selfishness all bottled into one seemingly charitable package.

I don't know about the events themselves, but I do know all those unwanted T-shirts end up in the rag bin in my shop.

The real beneficiary of those events must be custom T-shirt makers. I swear I've seen thousands of these shirts, most look never worn.

The core reason why organisations sponsor such events is due to the passive use of advertising to promote their products and services.

    This can be in the form;
•showing their logos along the race track
•being the only authorised supplier to the event ie. their products and services and/or the mere idea of associating themselves with something "positive".

I'm not saying they only do it for this purpose but this was the prime reason why such organisations first started to sponsored community events.

That's the one. I was trying to think when one person ever sponsored such events (and also I couldn't remember the word 'sponsored').

    1. Donations help the cause.

    2. Lots of people joining in brings awareness of the cause.

    3. If the donor is one person (like you say in this...I'm not sure that's how it works, but lets go with this) they get recognition for donating to a good cause, community building, etc etc.

Is it because you don't like running?

Or maybe he doesn't like his time monopolized. Or he resents being guilted into doing something for charity. Like when you work for a company and they try to tell you they expect 100% participation of employees to donate money to a certain charity. I always said no, and it appeared I was always one of the few who did not yield to their pressure. Then years later, that charity was discovered to be corrupt and somebody was embezzeling the money. Grrr. High-pressure charity is annoying.

I would dance for rich peoples enjoyment if it could help to get money for curing AIDS. Apparently they would rather watch me run, but whatever gets them in a donating mood I suppose. And it's good exercise. It is a pretty wierd concept, but I suppose the idea is that it raises awareness, and people are more likely to donate if there is some sort of event like a charity run, ball, or auction.

The rich guys are getting a goodwill. If they simply give their money away who will talk about it. But if a marathon is organised the chances that this will be on TV or newspapers are big and the chances of the rich men of getting their names associated with something good is big. It's good for their business and the money is good for researches.
