The same used to happen all those years ago when I still had parties. Very awkward. .. Awkward even more so, when it is just coming from your mother and her mother. What is one supposed to do when this happens? If you look at the floor, your actions might be interpreted as rude unless, you can feign shyness. If you divert your eyes away from them and look at some fixed point elsewhere, they'll more than likely be curious to know what it is that has caught your fancy. I don't think that it can be avoided unless you insist that you have a small party and that know one must sing.
