Three reasons why people still believe in religion:
1) Self-hate: Religion is able to manifest itself when people see themselves as inferior, needing and depending on a "higher power". Religious institutions take advantage of this by telling children that they are worth nothing without God. So, obviously, it will be hard for that child to shake off belief lest he completely lose himself.
2) Mob Mentality: An estimated 90% of the world believes in a religion/higher power/god. People want to be in the "in" crowd, so they follow religion. Religious institutions take advantage of this by instituting apostasy laws, scaring the masses into submission. Then, they further this by basing cultures and civilizations on the religion. This will deter anybody who wants to leave the religion as they do not want to be shunned by society.
3) Hysteria/Comfort: People do not want to discomfort themselves. This is the weakness of the human as it allows a person to discard rational thought for a comforting lie. Religious institutions take advantage of this by scaring them into submission (eternal damnation),then giving them a comfortable solution: obey and you will be saved. Mob mentality makes obeying orders easy and comfortable. Humans are intelligent, but the need to for pleasure totally limits rational decision to only what doesn't scare them. This is why many intellectuals, even in the modern day, believe in God.
Is it normal I don't buy into religion?
