Is it normal i can't work well when given an assignment?

When I'm assigned a project to do in school in one of my art classes, most of the time I do absolutely horrible. But when I am able to use creative expression and do my own thing, whether it be in the class or on my own, I can make pretty good artwork. Does this happen to anyone else?

    Some people don't work well under pressure. Normal.

    I'm the same way. When given an assignment, I'm more paranoid about when it's due so I rush and go with the first stupid ideas I might have.

    Perfectly normal. I'd do great work in all of my subjects, only to be left with a blank mind during some tests. Sadly, that's the way the cookie crumbles (sometimes).
