Is it normal i can't find any motivation?

For one reason or another, I can't find any motivation to do things that aren't required of me. For example, drawing. In school I have a drawing class, therefor I'm required to draw, and there lies my motivation. But outside of that class that motivation is gone. I enjoy drawing and want to do more, but outside of class I have no motivation to do so. So I don't. There's other things I want to do, like freerunning and music making, but there lies the same problem. I don't have any motivation to actually do them.

Its such a stupid problem to me, but I can't just force myself to do something I don't feel the need to care about. I guessed it might be me just being apathetic and lazy as usual, but I'm curious as to if others have the same problem.

Is It Normal?

  • I have been there, oh have I been there! I'm acutally really glad you posted this because I struggle with this, though, I am fighting it more and more every day. I want to do so many things, I have thought maybe it is because:
    1. I'm afraid to fail (according to my standards or someone elses)
    2. I'm lazy - but I'm not because when I am required to do something I am sooooo good at it.
    3. I feel guilty - sometimes in relationships people feel guilty because they think they should be using that time as 'quality time' - but dont buy it! People need their space!
    4. ADHD - yep, I've thought about it - ooohh how so many things can be blamed on ADD
    5. I feel I need to conserve my energy for when something is required of me - crazy, I know, just crazy
    6. Trying to avoid it for some reason, there is no rational, but sometimes when I feel like something is daunting, I avoid it by doing everything else but
    7. Perfectionism: yes, this is a recent revelation, perfectionism isnt necessarily everything is perfect, its that it must be perfect or not at all. All or nothing. For example: if I am going to clean the house it must be perfect and you get so caught up in the details that the whole thought of cleaning the house becomes overwhelming so you dont do it.
    8. What's your sign - sometimes I wonder about that - Capricorn?

    • I suffer all the same, but I am Taurus. Both are considered "negative signs", but I assure you it is not to be taken with a grain of salt.

It puts me at ease to blame all of my flaws and precautions as mental illnesses. As a result, I've become quite the hypochondriac.

      • Did you guys know that your personality is actually entirely designated by the number of walnuts within a 50 meter vicinity at the time of your conception?

        IT'S FUCKIN SCIENCE

        • I think its quite obvious that your sign does not determine your personality. But thank you for your comment, it was funny :)

      • OMG, that is really strange! Now I'm gonna have to look into this a bit more! I have read somewhere that Capricorns are notorious for taking the slow and steady (safe) approach in life...... anyway, weird and cool :)

  • Yeah, pretty normal. I'd love to learn Spanish or Japanese and sign language, but unless someone finds me classes to take and forces me to go, not gonna happen.

  • Talk to your mates in school about parkour/freerunning and then practise some stuff with them, and if you learn something new then show it to them and tell them how to do it.
The best motivations for me to do parkour are:
    1. The satisfaction of learning something new or meeting a target.
    2. Seeing the satisfaction and gratitude that other people feel when you teach them something they wanted to learn.
    Hope this helps!
