That's the paradox though! It has all the traits of mammals but no other mammal has scales or gills! Maybe it would be an exception like playpuses? They lay eggs but are still considered a mammal?
I was thinking they'd be the exception like platypuses are. Mermaids would just be another mammal alongside the seal, whale, and dolphin. Honestly, if they were real they'd be so fun to see! Would they even speak our language? They'd probably have their own unique animal sound and calls. It's kind of fun to think about.

Probably a mammal. Mammals have mammary glands that produce milk for their young. Since Mermaids have boobs, they'd probably have milk.
