Is it normal i am scared to buy a new mattress because of bedbugs?

I have read stories of people getting bedbugs from "Brand new" beds. The one I have now my cat peed all over. I cleaned it off but the mattress is already old and still smells strong. Is there anyway to ensure you don't get bedbug mattresses or is it just something people risk?

Is It Normal?

  • I'm scared to buy a new mattress because I think some people might have snuck into the store and had sex on it.

  • It is normal to feel this way, but you can order a new one from the manufacturer in a sealed bag with no worries, just look online

  • I suggest buying a mattress from somewhere reputable like Ikea. Your fear is normal.

  • Ew. I worked at a place that got bedbugs after some new yorkers stayed there. I didn't go back til after the place got froze out during the winter.

  • You would rather sleep on a disgusting mattress than buy a new one? I think you have more of a risk of your current mattress having bed bugs than any new mattress you buy.

    • No I just am not sure how to make sure the mattress is clean. I dont want to switch from this to an infested house of bugs. That does me no good! Stained to bugs is not much better. Also I know for a fact it does not have bugs in it.

  • I see no reason that bed bugs would be in a new mattress. They are attracted to all the skin cells, sweat and dust mites that collect to used ones.

    • Since a lot of new beds are not new. Its refurbished beds that they tear off the tops and replace it. A lot of times the bugs stay in the springs and other parts of used mattresses. Also you sweat and leave your dead skin cells on your used mattress. So a lot of beds claiming to be new are not. A lot of old refurbished mattresses are also stacked with new ones carelessly. Your name is bugs for breakfast you should know this. A lot of places selling BEDS lie and say a bed is new when it is a refurbished bed. A lot of refurbished beds have bedbugs in them.

      • Get one that's brand new. I have had my current mattress for about 4 years now and it is still in the sealed plastic rapper and also has an additional cover over it I replace every few months. I don't think it was refurbished but it was also $600.

        • Well that is obvious but when you are being lied to you don't always know what you are getting. Refurbished is passed as brand new. People do not realize they are being cheating.

  • It's normal to be scared. And rightfully so. I had bed bugs and they can cost thousands to get rid of. However if you buy the mattress from a trusted company than you should be okay just place it in the hot sun all day before you bring it in. They also have skin safe bed bug spray you might want to invest in getting some for extra precautions

  • Your old mattress is more contaminated than any new one could be. If you buy from a decent supplier, you can guarantee that it will be brand new. If you are still in doubt, do as 'bugsforbreakfast' does and keep it in its original plastic wrapper and use a mattress protector as a safeguard.
    Chill out!
