Not to worry, there is a twelve step program for this very addiction.
STEP 1.Admit that you are powerless against gum and your life has become unmanageable.
2.The way to stop relapsing into self-destructive gum-chewing is to build a healthier sense of self.
3.Make a decision to squarely face every stick of gum that is in the way of feeling really satisfied with your life.
4.Honestly look at the effects of your actions on others and yourself.
5.Take responsibility for your actions.
6.See that your knee-jerk reactions have to do with being in the grip of more or less conscious fears of gum.
7.Strive to find your motivation in a deeper sense of who you really are, rather than fear and defensiveness.
8.Make a list of all the people and wrappers you have harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.
9.Make direct amends to such people and wrappers wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10.Continue to take personal inventory and when you are chewing promptly admit it.
11.Stay in touch with a broader sense of who you really are, and a deeper sense of what you really want.
12.Keep at it, and share this process with others who are struggling.
I'm here for you, and believe you can do it. I wish you luck as you begin this journey of self-discovery and healing.
