Is it normal for your partner to threaten to kill you if you cheat?

To clarify I'm not the one with the threatening partner. It's a friend of mine. Literally. But I also heard from another guy that "everyone tells their partner this at one point."

Also, another clarification. We are talking about strictly in the situation of if the person cheats, their partner will "kill" them.

I personally found this insane, because I myself have serious mental problems and I've never even thought of telling my partner I would kill them if they cheated. Never even thought of that being a possibility.

So is this really a normal thing?

  • I dunno, dump the person anyway for good measure.

  • Only normal for violent possessive bullies

  • It is a little extreme. But good thing your friend isn't a cheater, right?

  • I hate when people take it too extreme. How can you kill someone you once loved? I think people over react when someone cheats on them. Of course it's bad and I don't justify cheating at all. But taking it so far where you threaten to kill your partner is just retarded.

  • And if your friend cheats just put them in witness protection.

  • Sounds like a yandere. Can't trust their parter even if they never cheated in the past, makes death threats against them, acts edgy to instill fear... Yeah, not a good relationship.

  • Motivation by fear is counter-productive for intimate relationships. Motivation by perversions is a different story. What should you do? Be a pervert.

  • You're right, it is insane.

Cheating is wrong, but controlling your partner with death threats isn't the answer. Whether he said it jokingly or not, it does not matter; death is no joke. He needs to trust her, not scare her into submission.

  • Ask your friend how he said it. Was it like "man I'd be so upset I'd kill you!" Or was it like "if you ever cheat on me, I will kill you"

  • I threatened to kill the last girl I dated if she ever cheated on me. She threatened to kill me if I ever lied to her, not cheated though. For cheating she just said she would make my life a living hell.

    • Isn't cheating essentially the same as lying? You have your partner under the impression that you're only committed to them, but you're not. Hence a lie.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • It's a common phrase. Only take it seriously if the actions are indicative something worse could happen.

  • Get away as fast and far as possible!

    • Well, I mean. I do live 2 hours from the guy. (Not my relationship.)

      • Then your friend must do something. These remarks could pose serious problems.
