Your friend is correct (except about the part that it's only towards people she likes) Every human, male or female, gives off pheromones. It's how we deem who is attractive to us, also it generally keeps us from not being attracted to our family members (Or something like that)
That's what happens; somebody says something as fact, other people believe it and pass it on as fact - suddenly you have whole swathes of people convinced of something potentially untrue.
We've all got to be careful, and reasonably sceptical.
