Dinner actually kind of is supper if it's at 8pm. Plus we have high tea, brunch, elevenses, and loads of people I know eat breakfast cereal right before bed. We are weird indeed but you love it. :P
Elevenses.. I didn't know that was a real thing. I'm actually watching all of the LotR movies right now, on The Return of the King, and Pippin' said in the first one, "What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?"
Aragorn must be American. Haha. But yes, weird is always a pleasure. :P
Ha! I liked the term "elevenses" so I looked it up to get more info....I like the American definition:
"In the United States, elevenses refers to the antiquated custom of the late-morning whiskey break."
I wish we still did such things! I've always been jealous of countries that do things like this. My favorite tradition is the siesta. Why the hell can't we relax and have a snack, nip of whiskey and a nap mid-day? I think things like this are a benefit to happiness and health.
There's loads of stuff in American culture that seems to come from Europe and either died off in both places or remains there and reminds us about our own history.
To my great-great-grandfather, elevenses would have been a morning break where he took whisky (although not healthily in his case). He worked in a mill and it was so strenuous that the labourers had to drink about eight or nine pints of fluid a day. Because the water wasn't potable, they drank beer. For his break, he drank whiskey. Apparently his young son had to bring him a quart of whisky around elevenses. Sounds weird in the context of today's culture.
But yeah, I agree with you. We live lives too structured around clocks and rigour and rules. Listening to your body and relaxing a bit when you need to is good for us. I don't think it's a coincidence that so many of us are depressed living the way we do.
You guys will make up a meal just to eat.. we just call them snacks. We don't give each hour a meal name. That's too much work. I could go for some hot chocolate right now. We've got freezing rain outside, I wish it were snow. Then the hot chocolate would be even better.
Well, define strange.. It's 5am. Since I don't work currently, I don't sleep normally. I've always had an odd circadian rhythm. The night is my day! Thanks for asking, but I am more than okay. Tonight I decided to indulge on the LotR trilogy. I wanted to watch Star Wars but I don't actually have any of the good ones on DVD or VHS. I settled.
Heh! You know what I think it is? Growing up in my house, food wasn't that plentiful and there was only enough for specified meals. If it wasn't a meal-time, you weren't allowed to eat. Having said that, things like brunch and high tea were only taken by posh people as an excuse for a social occasion so you're probably right.
They showed the LotR films here on terrestrial television over Christmas so I watched them all again too. And all six of the Star Wars films just before that. You should move to England. You can watch Star Wars and eat strange meals with me. :P
Well, that makes sense. I guess in America we just do whatever we want anyway so we don't need "proper" times to eat this and that.
I own them on DVD. I watched them all when I bought them a few months ago. I am at home without a working cable box in my room so I just popped the only good movies I owned in and 9 hours later here I am at the tail end of the great battle. I would love to share a movie night where we could watch all of the Star Wars movies! I've been dreaming of the day that it would be possible. I wouldn't mind being introduced to the world of strange meals either. :P
Is it normal for white people to have dinner at 5:30

Ha! Elevenses is great! Coffee and cake, or a biscuit and tea. Or, in my case, a cruller and hot chocolate.
You're up at a strange hour. You okay?
