Is it normal for someone to send you a friend request but not talk to you?

Someone I barely knew in school, 10 years ago, sent me a friend request on Facebook. I knew she was just trying to boost her friend count, so I purposely accepted her friend request and tried to chat with her about old times in school and stuff, knowing that she wouldn't really be interested and really just wanted me to accept the friend request without question. She responded to my first message, asking her if she was the person I remembered from school, but she didn't answer any further messages. This was good fun for me, pretending to actually expect to rekindle old friendships, but is this normal though? For people to send random friend requests to people they barely knew years ago, and then completely ignore them afterwards? It just seems really weird to me (that's why I tried to point it out by purposely trying to talk to her).

I've gotten some friend requests from people of my past and accepted them all without question when I was still active on social media. Some of them I didn't really remember but it was interesting to know who remembers you and who YOU remember in return -- not always a match, though.

People have different takes on it. I, for one, completely ignore most of it and choose to live in the present and interact with the few people who are in my life NOW.

The past is in the past, leave it there. Even if we add each other on FB, it's over.

I deleted all my social media because it was a huge time suck and I never really hung out with most people. All actually. Since I deleted Facebook I haven't heard a peep from anyone.

This is the only site I frequent.

Isn't it sad how so many people depend on social media? It's called lets see each other in person and actually spend quality time together. I haven't regretted deleting myself off Facebook yet.

Some people seem to like to collect facebook friends as some sort of status symbol.

    Fuckin weirdos.

I always say that facebook is where friendships go to die.
Yeah it is like once they add you, the friendship somehow just ends, like FB is the final destination.

I got out of high school in 1993.
My peers were assholes and these days even if they wantd to find me it would be no real avail since I legally changed my name years ago and have never used my old name on social media.

Besides, once we get older, we start to realize that all those people we thought were friends were basically people we didn't even like but wanted their approval.

It's pretty normal when you share like 37 friends you kind of have to lol. A lot of people use Facebook for networking and dont really intend to be very social with every friend.

I'm with Lorna: the past is past, and it should be left to rot away undisturbed. If you've lost touch with old friends, there's usually an excellent reason why you both let the friendship fade.

As for why she got in touch with you, maybe it was just a stupid, insecure friend-count boosting effort. Or maybe your name popped into her head in an idle moment and she vaguely wondered what had happened to you. Sensible people block their FB profiles from everyone but friends. Did she need to Friend you in order to see what's been going on in your life?

No, she didn't ask anyway. I barely knew her in school. I didn't really talk to anyone in school and never hung out with anybody, but least of all her. It's weird.

Sometimes people just want to see what other people they once knew are up to.
