Is it normal for sis to have bmi over 50?

Hey guys. I am really worried about my little sister. She is morbidly obese, 5'10", and 22 yrs old. She goes to the doctor once a month for something else but he only told her once to lose weight. She hasnt had any complications from the weight like high blood pressure or diabetes yet. But she really needs to lose the weight. My whole family is worried about her and we try to help her but she doesnt really care. The doctor isnt really pushing her to lose weight either. In fact she tol me the doc has never brought it up since the initial visit when he told her her BMI was over 50. Is this normal? What should we do? I mean she is an adult but how can we intervene and help.

She probably cares more than you think but likely feels like it's a lost cause. She knows she's obese and won't appreciate you talking about it. Bringing it up over and over is not going to help. In fact, it could make it worse. Pushing the issue will probably make her want to avoid you so she doesnt have to listen to it. All you can do is be there for her and set an example. Watch what you eat in front of her. Metabolism often plays a bigger factor than people realize. Eating poorly in front of her (even if your metabolism can handle junk food) will make her want to do the same. Eat healthy foods only when you're with her. Don't enable her with eating junk. Other than that there's not much you can do.

  • I think you guys should just talk to her and tell her that you're worried about her. She'll appreciate your honesty and that you care about her :)

So... What do you suggest? She must know she's overweight, do you think she can lose it all overnight?

350 pounds is a lot to weigh but its not that bad. depends on her body type. if she has massive boobs or whatever and a large frame, she may only be regular obese not morbid which means okay, shes at some risk, but not a lot.

I wish people would stop glorifying obesity and saying it's not bad when FOUR PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY DIED FROM OBESITY RELATED SICKNESSES.

If she keeps this up she will develop diabetis, depression, high BP, high cholesterol, lack of mobility, just to name a few. If she doesn't care that's her problem but if yall care about her then you need to educate her as best you can. A BMI of 50+ is actually off the charts for any age. Like literally off the charts as in a numberthat high is not on any chart for the mayo clinic, American confrence of sports medicine, or YMCA standards. Help her or she's dead man. American obesity curse.

I always wondered how people even maintain a BMI that high. Even in my most out of shape condition where I had no strenuous exercise and ate whatever made me feel good until I was full, I was maybe BMI 33 or 34. These people must literally eat like $30 meals at McDonalds at a time or consume $300 a week of butter and ice cream from the food store.

You definitely need to get help for her, but ease off a bit or you'll probably offend her more than you mean to. Everyone glorifying unhealthy obesity needs to drop dead. That's the problem with the world today. We pamper people and tell them it's okay even when the situation is deadly and something can be done about it. Has your sister considered gastric bypass? They take off a little of your stomach so you can't eat as much and you'll eat healthy portions. She would have to lose a few pounds before getting it done though. Good ole diet and exercise is the best route though. Of course if your sister is the impatient type, she may lose focus of her goal, but just cheer her on and even keep a chart of her progress. She will feel better and better.

It is not normal. She must be as fat as Michael Moore or William "the Refrigerator" Perry!
