I can be driving along and suddenly think "potato" or somthing random, kinda funny, kinda creepy..... normal?
When I think of the word 'random' random words pop into my head, now I'm thinking of strudels..
It may not be as random as it seems.
It is likely that there was something in the environment, consciously unnoticed, but unconsciously picked up, that brought the word up. Expanding your your awareness of your surroundings and asking what triggered that word/thought might reveal some surprises.

Petrichor, the smell of rain on dry earth
Pyknic, being short and of large girth
Jentacular, anything to do with breakfast
Bletcherous, something that deserves disgust
Catywompus, a mess, muddle or bomb-site
Katywompus, a person who uses this site
Aww, I'm glad you saw it. I originally had you down as a "nice" person but it didn't scan right. The thought was there, though. :D
Damn it! I replied with a little ditty of my own but it didn't post. Grrrrr. Well here it is, then I won't bug you anymore (today). Oh, sir dappled, you made my day, using my name in your poem that way. My brain can't obtain all those big words, tho my skull would make a good home for some birds. They go in thru the socket where there once was an eye, and out thru the other when its time to go fly. When they return, they shit in my head. That's just not nice! Now those birds are dead :(

It's not so much words as it is short little nonsense conversations that pop into MY head. Usually when I'm tired. Last night, "If you aren't going to do the dog walking, I'm going to kick your thermostat to the ditch." "Fine, give me the dog homologies." was one of many and I don't even have a dog. It's like everything I've heard that day, or recently all come together as my brain is preparing to relax. Like it's sorting out all the stuff and making sure it all still works. It's pretty fun. Even if sometimes it's just words that don't exist. (Pectafickareens!)
