The lesser elements of society are apparently threatened by anything that strikes them as too peculiar; their feeble minds just can't comprehend or tolerate such things, so they lash out. After all, it's said that the strongest form of fear is that of the unknown.
It seems as if these people act in such a way out of pure cowardice; after all, it's easy to team up with your homies and pick a fight with a loner, with someone who you damn well know won't have anyone to back them up. Again: pure, filthy cowardice.
With that said, just wait until you have to put up with the type of stuff that I've been through. All I can say is that these people do nothing but validate and fortify my misanthropic inclinations.
I'm not sure I agree with the greatest fear being the fear of the unknown. My girlfriend has nightmares about a spider with big teeth who rapes her when she opens the door after he uses his penis to knock at it. If someone knocked at the door and she said, "Who is it?" and the person said, "I'm a little old lady who has brought you some marmalade, but you don't know me yet", I bet she'd let her in before spider penis rapist!
Is it normal for people to target introverts?

Then again, victims have long memories.
