    Sounding Off on Noise

Why this article only focuses on children? I don't know. Truth is that background tv isn't all that good if it's on too often, too long.

Background TV: Children Exposed to Four Hours a Day
Watching too much TV is linked to harmful effects in children, but the latest research says even background TV can affect developmenthttp://healthland.time.com/2012/10/02/background-tv-children-exposed-to-four-hours-a-day/

Here's another one. Yeah, it's about children again, but it relates to all ages.

Environmental Noise May Be More Stressful Than You Realize

Home Sound--Many people don’t think of their homes as ‘noisy’, but if there’s a lot of activity in the home, including a constantly running t.v., this overall noise level can actually be a threat to concentration and a cause of stress. In fact, children from more noisy homes do suffer ill effects from this type of sound pollution that include less cognitive growth, delayed language skills, increased anxiety, and impaired resilience, according to a Purdue University professor in a related press release.

    • There was a time when scienfic journals said the earth was flat and medical journals have said all kinds of nonsense over the years. Try not to place blind faith in all that crap because things change.

      • Yeah, and it also depends on who funded a study. But seriously, if you ignore research, that's daft as all hell.

Blind faith? Huh? No, not religious. Evidence and outcomes only.

        • Unless you did the study or saw the actual evidence you're taking it on faith.

I've been called a lot worse than daft.

I take things as I see them and weight everything to draw my own conclusion. It gets me jammed up occasionally but thats how I live life. I tend not to place much weight on acedemics. They seem to change their minds most of the time.

          • Hmmm, that's okay.
            Life's a mystery.

Some academic research is bullshit, yeah. Tons of conflict of interest exists there. I kid not. But, anybody that can pick apart studies, can determine the legitimacy of what they're looking at. You look through citations and so on and so forth. Academics don't change their mind. You can't fake hard science. Subjective stuff? That can be weaseled. Don't make yourself look like an idiot. I don't think you're that dumb. Your responses are quite moderate and seemingly sensible.

TV is pretty much shit though.

            • I agree it is. I watch maybe 3 hours or so a month. It doesn't interest me any more. That includes movies.

The thing about the scientific process is its built to change when new evidence comes to light and there is always new evidence. This is why I often take it with a grain of salt.

              • Thumbs up. I thought so. You're sensible.

I must have sounded all seriously dogmatic. Nope. LOL!

If I was suddenly dictator of the world, I wouldn't like go out and ban everybody's tv.
