Some abusive parents have this mindset that consistent "tough love" approaches to handling personal issues will solve said issues. My mother definitely does this and has basically done the same thing as well.
I'm not sure if you've graduated from high school yet, but if you're an adult, consider finding some friends that you can maybe crash with for a bit. Or, some other family members. It helps to keep some distance after a big incident like this.
