I grew up with a southern Baptist preacher for a stepdad from the age of ten and recieved the belt reguarly for disobedience of any kind. My husband feels the same and still adminsters the belt to my 16 year old daughter.

On of the things that rarely works with children is punishment. And it definitely will not work with teenagers. It only incites fear into them, but it does not create incentives for good behavior.
I recommend taking away priveleges such as cell phones, tv, time with friends, etc. Keep consistency between bad behavior and consequences so they learn that certain behaviors are not okay.
But please, stop spanking your children. It may have worked for you, but it will not work with them.
