This would imply that the Dad demands the OP endorse the check or give him cash in return for the benefits the Dad is providing. There is a conditional precedent for the legal issues here.
OP just needs to take care of handling the money his or herself. I think the father is greedy, because my folks have never charged me rent, and nor would I ever charge a child of mine rent the father seems rather opportunistic.
