Is it normal for my dad to be this way?

so, im an 18 year old guy and id finally like to get my left ear pierced. my dad says that i cant as long as live in his house because he thinks that an ear piercing on a guy is gay, "for faggots" as he puts it. im straight and tried to explain that that is hardly a wide held view, but he wont listen.

at 18, shouldn't this be my decision, even if i live in his house?

  • Growing up in a religious, conservative family, I can't say it's abnormal for a parent to have that sort of reaction, unfortunately, but it doesn't make it any more okay.

Moreover, at 18, you're a legal adult (presuming you are in the USA). They should be able to deal with you getting a small piercing at that age, and should respect the decisions you make, even if it isn't what they want.

I'm sorry your parents have those sort of reactions/use terms like that towards you, though.

Don't Belive In Your Self Because In This Situation If You Belive In Yourself You Get Grounded For A Fucking Month Well You Are 18 So I Guess He Will Just Beat You.

Me being at 19 and I still live with my parents I'm a firm believer that I should do what is told. They provide everything for me clothes, food, a bed, and a house. If it takes you a little longer for you to move out than it's worth the wait. I sometimes disagree with my dad alot but he's my dad and he's in charge. Just don't fight it will only get worse. I just read that you did it anyways. Well that's a way to go. Well good luck with everything else.

You are 18, but you do live in his house. You should play by his rules. Get your own place and them do your own thing.

It is hard because you are old enough to do what you want legally... BUTTTTT... You still live in his house. It is difficult because of this. I say one ear piercing is not worth enough to become homeless so when you actually move out. Go crazy. :) do what you want. As long as you live at home it is one of those "his house his rules" things

Tell him that it's "Left is right, and right is wrong" That's the quote they used to use. :]

What about in the tops of the ears? Eyebrows? Lips? How's he feel about those?

I guess your dad hasn't heard the old saying, "left is right, and right is wrong" implying the left ear means straight, and the right ear means gay.

Regardless, you are 18, so I think you should be allowed to get your ear pierced if you want.

If you feel that way, why are you asking his permission, you're a legal adult yet expect to be given permission by your parent over something that really is completely your decision. it will not effect him, his house and it's not rude or a sign of rebellion againsed him as head of a house, home owner, parent or whatever role he wants to adopt.

Do it. Live with it. If it's shite, take it out. Nuff' Said.

why dont you get your nipples pierced i did and have never looked back. That will prob mean your dad will disown you for life ha ha! no seriously if you really want to get your ear pierced its hardly a big deal is it your dad shouldn't be so bloody uptight and anal i mean whats the difference if you do it anyway as soon as you leave home? i say just go and do it after all what will he do then chuck you out on the street? i don't think so and if he did then your better off without him in your life.
